They-Fear-Even-His-Horses was a chief of the most powerful tribe of Sioux Indians; the Oglala Sioux. He fought in the Red Cloud’s War in 1866 opposing the United States government’s building of the Montana road through their territory and was an advocate for peace after the Wounded Knee Massacre. He is illustrated here adorning a buffalo headdress used in the traditional ritual of the Ghost Dance. The Ghost Dance is said to reunite the living with the spirits of the dead and bring peace and unity to the native peoples throughout the region.
